What exactly is SMP?Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) replicates the appearance of hair follicles using non-invasive, temporary pigment deposits, providing the illusion of thicker hair. Differing from permanent tattoos, SMP typically endures for 1-5 years (or even up to 7). Our certified SMP artists demonstrate expertise in skill, technique, and a client-focused approach to cater to individual needs. At The Scalp Studio, we craft a distinct and personalized strategy to ensure the outcome seamlessly integrates with the natural hair on your head.
-
How natural looking are SMP results? Our skilled SMP artists undergo thorough training to guarantee seamlessly natural results and meet your needs. The aim is so that people won't notice any drastic changes to your scalp, but they'll certainly notice the enhancement in your hair—fuller and more youthful-looking. The procedure is tailored to take into account factors such as the degree of hair loss, skin type, head shape, and your preferred hairstyle.
-
Does the SMP procedure hurt? For the majority of clients, the discomfort is minimal, and considerably less than that of traditional tattoos. However we appreciate everyone has differing levels of pain tolerance, and we are mindful of that during treatment, to ensure our clients' comfort.
-
What is the difference between SMP vs. Tattoos? When comparing SMP to tattooing, three key distinctions emerge: 1) Depth of Pigment: In SMP, we deposit pigment at a shallower depth 2) Technique: Our approach exclusively involves creating tiny dots to mimic hair follicles, as opposed to shading or drawing lines. 3) Pigment Type: We use a specifically diluted, organic, black pigment, which differs from typical tattoo inks. As a result, it doesn't undergo color changes or become overly saturated as it heals.
-
Does SMP interfere with hair growth?Rest assured, your hair will continue to grow as usual. Micropigmentation has no impact on your hair follicles.
-
Is SMP suitable for long hair?Scalp micropigmentation effectively enhances the density in thinning areas, such as the crown or hair parting for both men and women. For those using it to reconstruct their hairline, maintaining shorter hair is advised to achieve a more balanced appearance.
-
Is SMP safe?At The Scalp Studio, we believe the safety and success of SMP largely depends on the qualifications and expertise of the SMP artist. It's crucial to choose a reputable and certified technician who has experience in performing SMP, which you will find at The Scalp Studio. We also adhere to strict hygiene and safety protocols, to ensure the procedure is carried out in a sterile environment to minimize any risk of infection. Other essential considerations are factors like medical history, skin type, life style and your personal preferences, among other important considerations. A thorough assessment of your scalp's condition and your overall health needs to be conducted before the procedure to identify any potential issues, hence The Scalp Studio encourages booking a FREE consultation for us to evaluate your specific needs, and understand any precautions we need to take into consideration.
-
How long do results last? The duration varies for each individual due to factors like skin type and lifestyle. Predicting the exact lifespan is challenging. Typically, SMP results usually last between 1-7 years before gradually fading. Many clients choose a touch-up session to refresh their look, often around the 3rd to 5th year.
-
Will it change color like tattoos? No, SMP is categorized as a form of permanent cosmetics. However, it distinguishes itself from tattoo ink in several ways. The pigment used by The Scalp Studio is meticulously crafted to align with the color spectrum of closely cropped hair. It contains no metals, extraneous colorants or additives and, over an extended period, will merely lighten rather than undergo discoloration. Additionally, SMP relies on specialized equipment distinct from that employed in traditional tattooing, guaranteeing that the needle and machine are expressly designed for micropigmentation on the scalp.
-
Who is a good candidate for SMP?While we strongly advise a FREE consultation to align your expectations with SMP results, it's notable that the majority of individuals are suitable candidates for SMP. Certain timelines may be observed, especially in cases involving medical treatments or the need for the skin to undergo further healing after an injury or scarring, before initiating SMP. We offer a wide range of services regardless of gender: Male & Female Pattern Baldness; Density Fill for thinning hair; Hairline definition to counter receding hair or create desired changes; Scar Camouflage; Concealing hair loss resulting from Chemotherapy, Alopecia, Burns or other medical related issues.
-
Is SMP suitable for women?Absolutely, SMP is a viable option for women as well! It's an increasingly popular choice for addressing hair loss and thinning. Whether you have short or long hair, SMP effectively creates the look of fuller hair without scarring and with minimal recovery time. For women, the procedure isn't typically aimed at mimicking a shaved look but rather at minimising the contrast between hair and the bare scalp, making it visually less conspicuous to others.
-
Will SMP work with grey hair?Certainly, individuals with grey hair can still achieve significant benefits from scalp micropigmentation. Initially, most clients are advised to trim their hair to a shorter, buzzed length. This approach minimizes the appearance of grey hair since the hair roots are naturally darker. Grey hair only becomes prominent as it grows longer. Additionally, we employ a grey-scale pigment that seamlessly blends to match existing grey hairs, ensuring a harmonious result.
-
If I have hair left, can I leave it long? The length of hair that can be maintained varies based on the pattern and severity of hair thinning. Scalp pigmentation is successful in adding thickness to specific areas, diminishing the visibility of the scalp. However, for more pronounced hair loss or low hair density, we advise opting for a shorter crop for the best looking results.
-
Can SMP hide my transplant scar?Yes, nearly one-third of our clients seek our expertise in scar camouflage. We can successfully conceal scars resulting from procedures like FUE, FUT, and also injuries to the scalp. We employ our specialised scalp micropigmentation technique to precisely deposit color-matched pigment into the scar, effectively minimising its visibility.
-

Additionally, clients are free to wear hats or headwear if they prefer.

Excessive sweating during this period can push pigments out, potentially diminishing your SMP results. After the initial 5 days, you can return to your regular exercise routine. Our package encompasses detailed aftercare guidance and ongoing post-treatment support, ensuring your satisfaction and successful recovery.
-
How long until I can sweat after the SMP treatment? We advise against heavy sweating or strenuous exercise for a period of 4-5 days following your SMP treatment. Excessive sweat can cause the pigment to break down and fade more quickly. Sweat on the scalp can lead to discomfort and irritation, especially in the days immediately following the SMP procedure when the skin may be sensitive.
-

How long until I can scrub, shampoo, or shave the SMP treatment area?We recommend refraining from scrubbing, shampooing, or shaving the treated area for a duration of 4-5 days after your SMP treatment. Shaving, scrubbing, or shampooing the treated area too soon after SMP can disrupt the settling and healing process of the pigments in your scalp. This can potentially lead to pigment loss or uneven distribution, affecting the final appearance of your SMP.
-
Can I still use Propecia and/or Rogaine after my treatment?Clients can maintain their use of Propecia throughout and after their scalp pigmentation procedure. However, we recommend discontinuing the use of Rogaine (topical minoxidil) for the duration of the treatment and for an additional 30 days following your final session. This precaution is taken to facilitate the optimal healing and settling of pigment, minimizing any potential interference from the chemicals present in Rogaine foam.
